I use a mixture of watercolour and water-based inks for most of my illustrations, with detailing in Indian ink, to keep the colours as vibrant as possible. I occasionally use alcohol-based markers to lay down a base colour then build up with the inks on top. Although I’ve used many different media before – from gouache paints to photoshop on the laptop, I enjoy the finish I get from watercolours and inks most.
For book illustration I work with the author to create a pencil storyboard that may go through a number of changes and alterations before the final illustrations are then created, using the storyboard images as a guide. The artwork is then scanned in at a high resolution (and may have a couple of tweaks using photoshop) before being collated for publication.
